NRO Pioneer Recognition Program

INFORMATION SHEET
The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) established the National Reconnaissance Pioneer Recognition Program to identify and honor those who have made significant and lasting contributions to national reconnaissance. 

NOMINATIONS

   Anyone may nominate an individual to be a candidate for pioneer.

   Nominees may be living or deceased. 

   Nominees may be, but are not limited to:

current or retired status

military, government civilian, contractor, academic personnel

   Pioneers will be chosen based on the significance and lasting effect of their contributions.

   Nominations will be blind; neither the Selection Board nor the Director, National Reconnaissance (DNRO) will know the identity of the nominator.

   As they already have been honored by the NRO, the following categories of individuals are ineligible for selection as pioneers:

                     Former NRO Directors and Deputy Directors          Former Directors of NRO Programs A, B, C, and D

                     National Reconnaissance Founders

   The 2003 pioneer nomination period will close on 28 February 2003.

   Nominations should be no more than one page, single-spaced, and should identify the contribution for which the individual is being nominated.

    Nominations may also be submitted electronically on the internal NRO system and NRO’s Intelligence Community Intelink website.

THE PIONEER SELECTION BOARD

    The Selection Board will review nominations and make recommendations to the DNRO.

    The Selection Board is chosen by the DNRO and consists of a panel with a variety of backgrounds in national reconnaissance.

    The Board will make its recommendations to the DNRO by 1 June 2003.

THE PIONEER RECOGNITION CEREMONY

    The 2003 induction ceremony will be held in September 2003 at the NRO Headquarters in Chantilly, VA.

    A medallion in Pioneer Hall at the NRO Headquarters will honor each Pioneer.
