NRO Joins Effort To Develop Radiation-Hardened Chip

8 December 1998

The National Reconnaissance Office has joined a partnership with the Air Force Research Lab, NASA, the Department of Energy and Intel Corporation to develop a radiation-hardened computer chip.

"This is another example of the NRO working to push the technology envelope while working with our partners in government and industry to do so more efficiently and cost effectively," said Mr. Keith Hall, Director of the NRO and Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space.

The NRO designs, builds and operates the nation's reconnaissance satellites. The organization has participated in a number of new technology efforts, the most recent being the October launch of its Space Technology Experiment satellite, which is testing 29 high potential advanced technologies for use in space. The NRO has also increased its research and development budget from four to eight percent over the last four years.
