Mr. Peter B. Teets was sworn in as Under Secretary of the Air Force and appointed Director of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) on December 13, 2001.
"I am extremely honored and pleased with the opportunity to have this job, especially under the current circumstances," said Mr. Teets. "The people of the NRO have a long history of providing this nation with the world's best space-based reconnaissance assets and I believe we can make a difference in national security space."
Within the Air Force, Mr. Teets is responsible for all actions of the Air Force on behalf of the Secretary of the Air Force and is acting secretary in the secretary's absence. As NRO Director, he is responsible for the acquisition and operation of all U.S. space-based reconnaissance and intelligence systems. This includes management of the National Reconnaissance Program, where he reports directly to the Secretary of Defense and the Director of Central Intelligence.
Mr. Teets has worked in various engineering and management positions with industry since 1963 and is the former President and Chief Operating Office of Lockheed Martin.
Mr. Teets received both a Bachelor and Master of Science in applied mathematics from the University of Colorado, which also presented him with an honorary doctor of science degree in 1990. He also earned a Master of Science in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
