Chief Master Sergeant Michael W. Whetsell was appointed in February 2012 as the Command Chief Master Sergeant and Senior Enlisted Advisor, National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), Chantilly, Virginia. His previous assignment was as the Command Chief, 688th Information Operations Wing, Lackland AFB, Texas. Chief Whetsell serves as the principal advisor to the Director of the National Reconnaissance and senior staff on matters relating to the professional development, military readiness, and mission effectiveness of enlisted personnel assigned to the NRO in numerous locations across the globe.
The Chief entered the Air Force in October of 1984. During his career, he has served in various communications positions at bases in Alabama, Alaska, Iceland, Delaware, Colorado, and Texas with positions ranging from Squadron superintendent, Group superintendent, and Wing Command Chief. Some of these assignments were Chief, Computer Configuration, Standard Systems Center at Gunter AFB, Alabama, Superintendent, Command and Control Systems, Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, Superintendent, Air Force Enterprise Systems Help Desk, Headquarters Standard Systems Group, Gunter Annex-Maxwell AFB, Alabama, Squadron Superintendent, 85th Mission Support Squadron Keflavik Naval Air Station, Iceland, and Superintendent, Information Systems Flight, 436th Communications Squadron, Dover AFB, Delaware.
Among the many awards and decorations received by Chief Whetsell during his Air Force career are the Meritorious Service Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, the AF Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the AF Achievement Medal, the AF Outstanding Unit Award with One Oak Leaf Cluster, the AF Organizational Excellence Award with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
Chief Master Sergeant Michael W. Whetsell holds an Associate’s Degree in Information Systems Management from the Community College of the Air Force, a Bachelor’s Degree in Management of Human Resources from Faulkner University, and a Master’s Degree in Information Technology Management from Trident University.
