SPAWAR Space Field Activity (SSFA) Background: The SSFA was established to coordinate Naval activities within the NRO.

SSFA Mission: To provide line management staffing of the NRO.

SSFA Responsibilities: Facilitate interaction between the Department of the Navy and the NRO; coordinate all naval space research, development and acquisition functions/activities between NRO and other non-naval space programs; provide naval space and warfare experience to develop superior and affordable space systems in support of national missions and joint, combined and naval operations, and to perform such other functions and tasks as may be assigned by higher authority.

Navy Civilian

NOTE: A majority of the Navy SPAWAR civilian positions are acquisition coded and require DAWIA certifications within 24 months of assignment to an acquisition position.

Some of the typical Navy SPAWAR civilian opportunities at the NRO are:

Scientist/Engineer: Analyzes, evaluates, and integrates scientific/engineering data from multiple sources to produce non-standard and innovative assessments and conclusions in his/her assigned area. Prepares unique and original analyses, assessments, or other products by applying expert judgment and specialized experience in interpreting scientific/engineering information and making decisions which impact agency policy and products. Prepares and presents briefings on projects, studies and analyses to high level administrative and technical Service managers, and participates as a representative of the activity or Service at various types of meetings and symposia at the DoD, national and international level.

Financial Specialist Analyzes, evaluates, and integrates financial data from multiple sources to produce non-standard and innovative assessments and conclusions in his/her assigned area. Prepares unique and original analyses, assessments, or other products by applying expert judgment and specialized experience in interpreting information and making decisions which impact agency policy and products. Prepares and presents briefings on projects, studies and analyses relating to financial activities to high level administrative and technical Service managers, and participates as a representative of the activity or Service at various types of meetings and symposia at the DoD, national and international level.

Information Technology (IT) Specialist: Performs complex assignments utilizing IT systems and services to include installation, operation and maintenance of automated communications systems and desktop technologies. Performs acquisition of major systems and oversees the storage, manipulation of data, management, movement, control, display, switching, interchange, transmission, quality assurance, or reception of information to meet the IT requirements.

Management Specialist: Analyzes, evaluates and integrates data from multiple sources to produce non-standard and innovative management assessments and conclusions in his/her assigned area(s). Prepares unique and original analyses, assessments, or other products by applying expert judgment and specialized experience in interpreting information and making decisions which impact activity policy and products. Prepares and presents briefings on projects, studies and analyses to high level administrative and technical Service managers, and participates as a representative of the activity or Service at various types of meetings and symposia.

Navy Military:

With a few exceptions, assignments to the NRO for active duty Navy Personnel are four-year assignments. Opportunities exist in many areas to include acquisition, space, communication, and support specialists.

Military assignments to the NRO are worked within the Department of the Navy's Command structure. Personnel interested in orders to the NRO need to contact their appropriate Detailer.
