| The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has established
the National Reconnaissance Pioneer Recognition
Program to identify and honor those who have made
significant and lasting contributions to national
reconnaissance. Each year the Director of the NRO
will select two to three individuals as "pioneers
of national reconnaissance." This year,
in recognition of the NROs 40th
anniversary, the DNRO will select 40 pioneers.

NOMINATIONS
- Anyone may nominate an individual to be a
candidate for selection as a Pioneer.
- Nominees may be living or deceased. In addition
nominees may be, but are not limited to:
> current or retired status
> military, government civilian, contractor,
academic personnel
- Pioneers will be chosen based on the significance
and lasting effect of their contributions.
- As they have already been honored by the NRO,
the Director, NRO (DNRO) requests that former
Directors, Deputy Directors, and Program Managers
not be nominated for the Pioneer award.
- The nomination period closes April 14, 2000.
- Nominations should be no more than 1 page,
single-spaced (excluding administrative data),
and should identify the contribution for which
the individual is being nominated.

THE PIONEER SELECTION BOARD
- A Pioneer Selection Board will review nominations
and make recommendations to the DNRO.
- The Selection Board will be chosen by the
DNRO and will consist of seven people with a
variety of backgrounds in national reconnaissance.
- The Year 2000 Board will convene by 1 May
2000 and conclude its business by 1 June 2000.
THE HALL OF PIONEERS & THE PIONEER RECOGNITION
CEREMONY
- A Hall of Pioneers will be dedicated at NRO
headquarters in Chantilly, VA. Each Pioneer
will be honored by a medallion on which the
pioneers name and contribution will be
engraved.
- Each year a ceremony will be held to publicly
honor the selected Pioneers and "induct"
them into Pioneer Hall. For the year 2000, the
ceremony is tentatively scheduled for September
27.
- Each Pioneer will receive a plaque as a memento
of the induction ceremony.
