Dan Stewart

Acting Principal Deputy Director, NRO

Daniel J. Stewart serves as the acting principal deputy director of the National Reconnaissance Office (PDDNRO), providing day-to-day management of the organization with decision responsibility as delegated by the NRO director.

Before he was selected as the acting principal deputy director on 19 May 2025, Stewart served as the deputy director of the NRO’s Geospatial Intelligence Systems Acquisition (GEOINT) directorate. In that role, he was responsible for the successful execution of all national geospatial intelligence satellite systems acquisitions within the NRO, managing a budget of over $15 billion.

Originally from Maumee, Ohio, Stewart joined the CIA in 1990 through the career trainee program. One of his first assignments was as a program manager supporting the acquisition of communication satellites. Since then, his career has included a broad array of acquisition, system engineering, research and development, and operations assignments, managing some of the highest priority systems in the Intelligence Community.

Stewart holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from Eastern Nazarene College and a Master of Science in aerospace engineering from Pennsylvania State University. Stewart and his wife, Amy, reside in Ashburn, VA, and have two daughters.
