Declassified NRO Programs and Projects

The NRO has for over 60 years designed, built, launched and operated reconnaissance satellites and certain aerial reconnaissance vehicles. Some legacy programs have been declassified. Those records are available via the "Declassified Records" links to the right. the vast majority of NRO programs remain classified and even their names cannot be released to the public.

The NRO periodically reviews collections of records associated with a single historically significant NRO program or project for declassification and public releases. This program is required by Selection 3.4 of Executive Order 13526, Systematic Declassification Review.

There remain still classified facts about all declassified programs, which cannot be released to the public. Classification of facts about current and legacy NRO programs inhibits the release of information that might help target countries or organizations impair the effectiveness of current programs.
